ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND CONSERVATION
Lack of environmental education and conservation programs targeting youth is a critical problem in Tanzania hindering environmental sustainability across the country. Through training and awareness raising initiatives, we inform, impart conservation knowledge and engage youth to protect, conserve and manage natural resources in their communities. Our actions build the next generation of conservation leaders who will ensure and bring an environmentally sustainable Tanzania.
TREE PLANTING
Deforestation is the biggest environmental problem in Tanzania; the problem is already creating enormous human and ecological problems to rural and urban communities across the country. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism estimates that Tanzania is losing between 300,000ha to 400,000ha annually due to higher demand of forest resources resulting from increased consumption of wood and charcoal making to meet cooking energy needs.
TAYEN efforts in addressing this problem has been on training youth to establish community tree nurseries, establishing tree nurseries, and advocating and conducting tree planting initiatives in deforested areas across Tanzania.
CLIMATE CHANGE (MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION)
As stated in 2010 UN Youth and Climate Change Report, although climate change affects individuals of all ages, young people can expect to bear a particularly heavy, burden because they will live longer and will face this challenge throughout their lifetimes. Extreme weather events particularly prolonged droughts and floods will affect youth particularly those in rural areas where communities depend on natural resources.
Recognizing this, TAYEN educates, organizes climate change campaigns, implement adaptation and mitigation projects to tackle climate change problem in Tanzania. Our climate change initiatives range from promoting the use of renewable energy such solar lanterns, planting trees and promoting sustainable lifestyle to reduce carbon footprint
PROJECTS
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
A major portion of the young population in Tanzania, both male and female, generate incomes within the informal sector. This fragile labour force accounts for around 75% of total youth employment. They are also more prone to unemployment in urban areas, and paradoxically, when they are more educated, For example: current youth unemployment rates stand more than 7.1% for urban youth, higher even for the rural areas.
We work with local and international organizations and private companies to train rural and urban youth to bring new ideas and start small businesses in sectors like Agriculture, Energy, Water, Sanitation and Waste to generate incomes for themselves, bring social change and sustainable development in communities
